Grow more trees to avert natural disasters
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 02:32 [IST]

Vellore: Eminent agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan has exhorted people to grow more trees to avert natural disasters that wreck havoc and help improve the fertility of the soil.

Planting different varieties of trees could also help one tackle many diseases as its parts are used for medicinal purposes. They can also give one mental peace as one sees greenery all around, he said, speaking as chief guest at the Vellore Institute of Technology here yesterday on the occassion of the green vellore campaign.

Pointing out that the nation had seen rice and wheat revolution in 1968 and then the green revolution in villages, he said the VIT was an example of having abundant greenery all around and leading by example.

Prominent business units in the district presented cheques to VIT chancellor Viswanathan in aid of the green vellore campaign.
