Govt notifies appointment of inquiry commission
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 14:34 [IST]
Puducherry: The one-man commission of inquiry headed by G Theva Needhi Dhas, set up to look into the police protests and consequent incidents in a court complex here on December 19,has also been asked to suggest remedial measures to prevent occurrence of such happenings in future.

Dhas, who is the Managing Director of the state-owned AFT mills, has been appointed as Special Executive Magistrate under section 21 of the Criminal Procedure Code and asked to submit the inquiry report not later than a period of one month, a government release said today.

Around 300 Police personnel staged dharnas in the court complex protesting denial of bail to a sub-inspector of police in a bribery case. Some photo journalists covering the protest were roughed up allegedly by the police. However, the SI was granted bail later on a fresh bail application on the same day.

As various political parties and journalist associations condemned the incidents and demanded action against the guilty, the government ordered the probe on December 21.

As per the terms of reference of the inquiry, the probe would cover the circumstances that led to the events inside and outside the court building on December 19,the reasons if any that had led to manhandling of mediapersons allegedly by police personnel.

The inquiry officer would also investigate whether any injury had been caused to any person and if any damage of property or equipment was caused in the incident.
