Pakistan will act if India provides credible evidence: Official
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 21:01 [IST]

Islamabad: Pakistan will act against all those involved in Mumbai's terror attacks in the country if India provides credible evidence of their involvement, a senior official said Tuesday.

Rehman Malik, interior advisor to the prime minister, made the remarks at a joint press conference with Interpol secretary general Ronald Noble here. Malik said India has neither officially informed Pakistan about the arrest of a Pakistani national nor shared any concrete proof about those involved in the attacks. He said Pakistan has offered unconditional support to India to investigate the case. Pakistan is a sovereign country and would take any steps to safeguard its national interest, the official Associated Press of Pakistan quoted Malik as saying.

Responding to a question about the ban on Jamaat-ud-Dawa by the UN Security Council, he said the organisation could go to the UN to ascertain the reasons for the ban. Malik confirmed that the foreign office had received a letter from Ajmal Kasab, the only accused held by India for Mumbai attacks, seeking legal assistance. Malik said experts were examining the letter and the foreign office would issue a statement in this regard.

Malik said Pakistan and India were both victims of terrorism and joint action was needed to tackle the problem. Noble said India has not provided any name (on terrorists) to the Interpol. Pakistan is an important member of the global police organisation and a victim of terrorism, he said. Earlier in the day, the Interpol chief discussed with Malik the current situation in the wake of Mumbai attacks and problems of human trafficking, among others.
