Miss Asia's death fuels speculation in Britain
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 18:30 [IST]

London: The family of Asian model Sahar Daftary, who plunged to her death from the balcony of a luxury apartment in Manchester, says she would not have killed herself.

The beautiful Afghan-origin Miss Face of Asia, had “everything to live for,” family members told The Daily Mail.

The family also said her husband, Pakistani-origin businessman Rashid Jamil, had been married three times before and that it was unclear whether his third marriage was admissible under English law.

Although her death is being treated as suicide or accident, the paper said a pornographic video clip apparently featuring Daftary and an unnamed man had recently been posted on a publicly-accessible website.

She was said to have feared the footage would damage her career, and police are expected to examine whether somebody had made it public out of spite, it said without quoting a source.

The model had previously lodged a complaint of sexual assault with police, the Evening Standard reported.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police received a report of sexual assault in May 2008. An investigation was launched but the victim refused to co-operate further."

Daftary, who would have turned 24 this week, married 33-year-old Jamil in a lavish ceremony last year, but her family says she left Jamil after finding out about his previous marriages.

The Mail said Jamil first had an arranged marriage in Pakistan, which ended in divorce. His second marriage with lawyer Sabina Malik also ended in a divorce. The third was with marketing executive Narissa Amjad, but it was unclear whether it had legal sanction.

He has two children from Amjad.

Jamil was arrested on suspicion of murder after Daftary plunged to her death from his 12th floor waterside apartment in Manchester during the weekend but was later released on bail.

Daftary's brother-in-law Joe Karim said: “She would never commit suicide. It was against everything she believed in. She had everything to live for. She was a beautiful, intelligent, religious woman.”

A police source said: “Witnesses have said there was no shouting or ranting - just a single scream. It is being looked at as either suicide or a horrible accident.”
