Mumbai: Mohammed Ajmal Amir, the lone terrorist caught alive in the November 26 terror strikes, was on Wednesday remanded in police custody till January 6 by a local court here.
The custody was granted in connection with the case registered in the Marine Drive police station for hijacking a Skoda car after abandoning a police jeep and for threatening the owner of the vehicle with an AK 47.
Due to security concerns, Ajmal was not produced before a regular court, and Metropolitan magistrate N N Shri Mangale and public prosecutor Eknath Dhumal went to the police lock-up, where the terrorist is being kept.
Prosecutor Dhumal said Ajmal was quiet throughout the ten minute hearing of his remand and only told the magistrate that he had no complaints of ill treatment against the police
City-based lawyer K B N Lam had on Tuesday said that he had handed his vakalatnama to the Mumbai police seeking to appear for Ajmal. "The police can show it to Ajmal and if he is interested he can sign it and I would appear for him," Lam said.
However, no lawyer appeared for him on Wednesday. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said, "We are awaiting response from the legal aid of Pakistan Consulate General which had been sought by Ajmal. Vakalatnamas filed by other lawyers will be taken into consideration later."
Ajmal's police custody ended on Wednesday. On December 11,the magistrate had visited the Mumbai crime branch, following which Ajmal was remanded in police custody for 14 days.
Ajmal and his co-terrorist Ismail Khan, who was killed in a shootout with the police, had ambushed and killed six policemen, including ATS chief Hemant Karkare, Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte and Inspector Vijay Salaskar, on November 26 night.
