SAS will train 150 city cops in anti-terror cops
Thursday, December 25, 2008 03:39 [IST]
Mumbai: The November 26 terror attacks in the city have forced the Mumbai police to get its officers trained in tackling such strikes in future.

The city police, apart from having Force One, would soon have 150 policemen specially trained for terror operations. A senior officer said after the recent instances of hostage situations like the Rahul Raj case and November 26 terror attacks, there was an immediate need to train policemen.

"Already 75 policemen were trained by Ashok Kamte, additional police commissioner, who was gunned down by the terrorists. We will train another 75 policemen in combat shooting, handling hostage situations and conduct effective checks during nakabandis. And everyone would be trained to tackle terror strikes," Hasan Gafoor, police commissioner, said.

The police administration sent out a notice on Wednesday to all police stations in the state asking young officers willing to take special training to enlist their names.

Gafoor said officers from the Special Air Service (SAS) of Britain, members of the Hong Kong police, and retired army men would train the officers. And training would start in the first week of January.

"We have asked for weapons such as MP5 and MI5 and more bulletproof jackets from the government. The government is planning to set up a National Security Guards (NSG) unit in Mumbai; all this will certainly help tackle terrorism," Gafoor said.

Special Air Service: The Special Air Service was created by Captain David Stirling in 1941. The 22nd SAS of the British Army has been part of every major British conflict since World WarII, including the Falklands War and Gulf War I and II. It is mostly involved in counter terrorism and reconnaissance. The SAS is one of the worlds most renowned special forces regiment.
