Mumbai: As motorists move crawl in the dark on JVLR, the most prestigious road of the MUTP, shockingly, signals such as the one at Thakur Nagar in Kanjurmarg are running on DG sets.

"This signal was set up long back. It was not functional for a long time. Now, since the electricity problem seems far from over, for the past two to three months, the road contractor (Mahavir Constructions) has been forced to run it on diesel generators," a senior MMRDA official confirmed to DNA.

While Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) officials claimed that they have finished road lighting work for the first phase of the road (4.90 km from the Western Express Highway to Saki Vihar Road junction near Lamp;T, Powai), they said that some portions of the second phase (4.30 km from Saki Vihar Road junction to LBS Marg junction) has to be shared between REL and Mahavitaran.
"Since the Powai footpath of this stretch falls in the Mahavitaran area, we have to obtain certain clearances from them. Also, in areas such as Gandhi Nagar, we are waiting for the MSRDC to finish the work. In case of the third phase (1.10 km from LBS Marg junction to Eastern Express Highway) no work has been done since the area totally falls under the Mahavitaran jurisdiction," a senior REL official said. But Mahavitaran officials said that no formal work order had been issued to them regarding this. "But we cannot start work in Mahavitaran territory before we get space to construct a sub-station," the REL official said.
