Cremation at Manikarnika ghat halted
Thursday, December 25, 2008 09:19 [IST]

Varanasi: Cremations at Manikarnika Ghat here were halted today for about two hours in demand of uninterrupted flow of water in the river Ganga.

Cremation work came to a standstill when people involved in cremation work joined a protest in support of Mahashmshan Peethadishwar Baba Naag Nath Yogeshwar, who is on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 159 days, demanding uninterrupted flow of water in the holy river.

Several organisations had launched agitation here in this regard but most of them called off their protest after the announcement of the river as national river by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. However, Baba Naag Nath continued his agitation against stopping of river water at Tehari dam.
