Chidambaram to be briefed about Pondy police stir
Friday, December 26, 2008 14:36 [IST]

Puducherry: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who is visiting the Union territory tomorrow, would be briefed on the steps being taken by the local government to deal with the situation arising out of the recent unprecedented mass agitation by the police here.

Though Chidambaram will be here to attend a function in the Pondicherry University, official sources said a detailed report on the December 19 incidents during which over 300 police personnel resorted to dharnas inside a court complex demanding bail to an Sub-Inspector arrested in a graft case was likely to be submitted to him.

The sources said the centre had taken a serious view of the agitation by the police and dispatched three companies of para military forces for deployment following a request from the territorial administration.

For its part, the government here has revamped the police administration by transferring DGP A S Khan back to Delhi and replacing him with Alok Kumar Verma.

Puducherry Home Minister Valsaraj had said the government was keen that normalcy should be maintained and all necessary action was being taken in this regard. He said disciplinary action had been initiated against some police personnel.

After assuming charge, Verma has constituted a high-powered committee of police officials headed by Senior Superintendent of Police Sindhu Pillai to prepare a full fledged report on the December 19 incidents, including the assault of media persons allegedly by the police during the agitation.

Official sources said the DGP had asked the committee to present the report within a day. The Government had already set up a one-man inquiry commission to go into the incidents.

Meanwhile, the local Bar Association has demanded action against ten police officials, accusing them of being responsible for the police agitation.
