Tanzania to send 23 patients for free surgery
Friday, December 26, 2008 17:40 [IST]
Dar Es Salam: The Lions Club of Dar es Salaam in collaboration with Regency Medical Centre and Rodney Muttie Mengi Foundation will send 23 heart patients for free heart surgery in India.

The patients will leave for Narayama Hrudayalaya Heart Institute in Bangalore, India on Jan 14 next year and they will be back to Dar es Salaam on Feb 14.

A statement issued by Dr Rajni Kanabar, Convener of the Heart Surgery Project (District 411B) indicated that there would also be 10 children from Uganda who would fly with the group on the same day.

They are also being sponsored by Lions Club of Kampala and Rodney Muttie Mengi Foundation. Kanak Singh Babla, a Tanzanian living in Mombasa, has donated 20,000 US Dollars for sponsorship of ten surgeries and another USD 15,000 for the Lions Eye Centre which helps blind people.

"We also thank Jumbo Travels and Emirates Airline for the arrangement and discounted rates," said Yusuf Dalal, President of the Lions Club of Dar es Salaam.

He however said that the club was short of at least USD 4,000 to cover up the expenses of the subsidized heart surgeries, calling on well wishers to contribute to give the 23 patients new lease of life.
