China punishes 5,000 officials for corruption
Friday, December 26, 2008 18:32 [IST]

Beijing: The Chinese government has taken penal actions against some 5,000 senior officials for corruption and breach of law, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said Friday.

Gan Yisheng, deputy head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, said that nearly 5,000 officials have been punished for acting against the public interest, including corruption and breach of law.

He said 801 officials have been already prosecuted, while the supervision departments have settled 144,000 cases and penalised 151,000 officials since November 2007.

He said the government is committed to intensifying anti-corruption measures and "win (back) the trust from people with actual results".

He said the cases of corrupt officials would be seriously dealt with.
