BSF chief visits India-Pakistan border areas
Sunday, December 28, 2008 00:58 [IST]

Amritsar: Amid heightened tension between India and Pakistan following the Mumbai terror attack last month, Border Security Force (BSF) director general M.L. Kumawat Saturday visited frontline security positions in Amritsar and Ferozepore districts of Punjab.

BSF officials on the Punjab frontier sought to downplay the visit saying it was a routine one for Kumawat after taking over as the BSF chief recently.

However, Kumawat was briefed by officers of the paramilitary force about the increased movement of troops, especially Pakistan's army units, on the other side of the border.

The BSF chief also met troopers at border posts in the Khem Karan and Khasa sectors in the Amritsar-Tarn Taran belt of Punjab.

Meanwhile, a mentally challenged Pakistani national, who inadvertently came into India Friday night, was Saturday handed over by BSF officials to the Pakistani Rangers at the Attari-Wagah border, 30 km from here.
