Mumbai: A 51-year-old agent working in the diamond market was arrested for allegedly betraying the trust of a diamond merchant. The agent allegedly stole a packet containing diamonds worth over Rs10 lakhs, on the pretext of showing it to a customer. The agent has been identified as Rajendra Shah, a resident of Daftari Road in Malad (W).
According to the DB Marg police, Shah was working in Panchratna Building at Opera House. In May 2007,he visited complainant Arvindbhai Dhabis Jagruti Gems office in the building, where he learnt that Dhabi was looking for an agent to sell diamonds worth Rs10.26 lakh. "Shah told Dhabi he knew someone who might buy the diamonds. He then took the packet containing the diamonds on the pretext of showing it to the customer," senior police inspector, NR Mali, of DB Marg police station said. After two or three days, when Shah did not return with the diamonds, Dhabi approached the police. The police then got hold of Shah, but Dhabi pressed for a settlement and did not lodge a police complaint, the police claimed. "Since the victim knew Shah for 12 years, he thought he would settle with him, and did not register a case," a police official said.
When even after a year Dhabi was unable to recover any money from Shahs, he lodged a complaint with the Girgaum metropolitan magistrate court. On October 10,the court ordered the DB Marg police to probe the case.
