Mian Altaf wins Kangan for fourth time

Srinagar: Veteran Gujjar leader of National Conference Mian Altaf Ahmad retained Kangan constituency for the fourth time in a row when he defeated his nearest PDP rival Bashir Ahmad Mir.

Ahmad, a former Minister, was elected to State assembly from Kangan constituency for the first time in 1987 and retained the seat in 1996 and 2002 assembly elections. A law graduate from the University of Kashmir, Ahmad held the portfolis of social welfare and health and medical education in the Farooq Abdullah Government in 1996. Born in a prominent family of Baba Nagri Kangan in 1958,Ahmad s family has a long political standing, with his grandfather Mian Nizam-ud-din having remained National Conference MLA from 1952 to 1967.

His father Mian Bashir Ahmad represented Kangan constituency from 1967 to 1987 on a Congress ticket and was a minister also.
