Sunderban tiger mauls girl, forest official

Canning (WB): A teenaged girl and a forest official were injured today when an adult tiger mauled them after entering Betalpara village of Kultali in the Sunderbans.

"A class V student, Usha Sardar, was seriously injured when the tiger pounced on her this morning," Divisional Forest Officer, South 24-Parganas district, Shuvendu Bandyopadhyay said, As the girl shrieked in fear and pain, villagers chased away the tiger and it took shelter in a cowshed in the village. They kept it confined by throwing fishing nets around the shed. DFO said the tiger later attacked a forest official, Kalipada Mondal, when he fired a tranquiliser shot at it. Bandyopadhyay said the tiger which swam across the Herobhanga river from Jharkhali forest in the Sunderbans was caged and will be released in the forest.
