Dediapada: Girl child education has become a mass movement in the state after his government initiated the girl child enrolment drive in 2001,Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi claimed here today.
Modi, who was here to attend a girl child education programme, said that because of the efforts of government, the state has seen improvement in the education sector.
"When I took over as Chief Minister in 2001 and in the first meeting, some bureaucrats told me that Gujarat ranked 20 in the education in the country, it came as a shock to me and I decided to launch a movement in this field," he said while addressing a public meeting in the tribal district.
He added that he has created a corpus for education of girl child and he gives away all gifts and other presents that he gets to that corpus.
"So far, Rs 19 crore has been given in the corpus to fund the girl child education," he added.
According to him, many voluntary organisations and other agencies have contributed to the corpus.
Meanwhile a delegation of local Congress leaders, led by local MLA Amarsinh Vasava, was detained by the police when they tried to meet Modi to present him a memorandum.
"We wanted to present memorandum to Modi but we were prevented and detained by the police," Vasava told PTI.
He alleged that the district administration was misused as it was asked to bring people for the CM s public meeting. Source : PTI
