Congress to consult Jammu and Kashmir leaders
Monday, December 29, 2008 08:28 [IST]

New Delhi: The central leadership of the Congress, which holds the key to the formation of the next government in Jammu and Kashmir, Sunday decided to consult state leaders on which party to support, party sources said.

The Core Committee of the party held a meeting at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's residence here to discuss the equations emerging from the state assembly results announced earlier in the day.

While the National Conference is the largest party in the 87-member assembly by winning 28 seats, it is followed by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) which has bagged 20 seats. The Congress, with 17 legislators, is in a position to decide which party will lead the next government.

The meeting, however, remained inconclusive and party president Sonia Gandhi decided to consult state leaders including former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and state party president Saifuddin Soz Monday, the sources said.
