Monday, December 29, 2008 08:40 [IST]

Tehran: Iran's state television says the country s Red Crescent Society has sent cargo planes filled with 50 tons of relief assistance to Egypt to be sent on to Gaza.

An announcement on the Iranian Red Crescent Web site yesterday said the consignment included food and other supplies.

Earlier on Saturday, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad condemned Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip and said Iran would stand by the Palestinians.

Israeli warplanes began bombarding Gaza Saturday killing more than 290 people and wounding 800.

Iran's Red Crescent Society says it plans to send a ship loaded with medicine, food and clothing to Gaza, soon.
