Mumbai: Stating that the recent terror attacks has generated an unprecedented level of political awareness and activism, Union Minister of Power Sushilkumar Shinde said he hoped that the present generation will play a larger role now. He was delivering the convocation address during the annual convocation ceremony of the Mumbai University.
"The attack has made people more aware of the shortcomings in our politicians, security agencies, intelligence agencies and police and has raised awareness about our ability to cope with such disasters. The level of activism and political awareness is unprecedented. This gives me hope that the present generation will play a much larger role in shaping the destiny of our country," said Shinde.
Saying that terrorism has a severely disruptive effect on the lives of people, Shinde said, "We must not lose heart in the face of such challenges, but treat them as opportunities. Confidence is never shaken in Mumbai."
Around 1,70,000 students were conferred various degrees and diplomas at the convocation. The event, held at the Fort campus on Tuesday, included students from the faculties of arts, fine arts, commerce, science, technology, medicine and law among others.
"This is my alma mater that I address today. Convocation is an important landmark. It marks ones transformation from the sheltered life at a university to the real world where you will put to practice what you have learned here," said Shinde. Besides terrorism, Shinde also underlined two more challenges global warming and climate change and economic recession. He stressed that to tackle all these problems, different disciplines need to come together, collaborate and work towards outlining the solutions.
Around 78 medals were also presented to several disciplines to the passing-out students. Gaurav Gadgil from the Department of History received the "President of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal" jointly with the University of Mumbai for his academic achievements, extra-curricular activities and performance at interview.
Similarly, Sarah Verghese from the universitys Department of History received the "Chancellors Medal" for securing the highest marks in history among the successful candidates at the MA degree examination of April 2008.
