Police make lathicharge to disperse groups
Wednesday, December 31, 2008 12:52 [IST]

Puducherry: Police lathicharged members of two groups who came to blows at Govindasalai here last night over a dispute on enumeration of families for distribution of flood relief of Rs 1,000.

Nagammal, a municipal councilor of Tirumudinagar ward, pleaded that no families should be left out as the relief should be available to all families without discrimination, polie said.

She had the support of functionaries of Manidha Neya Makkal Iyakkam (Movement for promotion of humaneness).

However, those belonging to the rival group allegedly owing allegiance to the local DMK legislator intervened and had a counter argument with her and this led to the clash. Stones were hurled by the members of the two groups against each other.

Police rushed to the spot and made a lathicharge to disburse the clashing groups. The para-military forces already camping in Puducherry since last few days were also positioned in the area to prevent escalation of violence.

Cases had been registered against 12 persons, police sources said.
