Mathura: The Uttar Pradesh government is contemplating a proposal to relax norms for the setting up of universities in the state to facilitate participation of the private sector in higher education.
"In order to encourage more private participation in the higher education, we are going to reduce the land requirement for a university from existing 50 acre to 30-35 acres," Higher Education Minister Rakeshdhar Tripathi told PTI.
The minister said the state has set a target of 12 per cent enrollments in the higher education sector, as against the national average of 15 per cent. "Increased participation of private sector will help the state achieve the target," he added.
To check use of unfair means and maintain sanctity of examinations in higher education will be the two priority areas of the government in the new year, he said.
The minister said that the government has decided to recruit 1600 teachers by May, to overcome paucity of faculty in private and state-run degree colleges.
"On-line learning will enable the student to attend lectures through video-conferencing," Tripathi said.
He said that 20 post-graduate colleges in the state have been selected for the first phase of on-line learning programme.
The minister said that emphasis was being laid on regularisation of academic session in universities.
