MCD to start anti-littering drive in new year
Wednesday, December 31, 2008 16:12 [IST]
New Delhi: An anti-littering drive, a public awareness campaign and upgrading of waste disposal mechanism - civic authorities are adopting a three-pronged plan in the new year for a clean Delhi before the Commonwealth Games 2010.

To crack down on littering and urinating in public places, civic inspectors will be deployed in various parts of the city who will also have the power to impose on-the-spot fines, an MCD official said.

"A circular has been issued in this regard last week," he said adding, the civic agency will adopt a "three-pronged strategy" as part of its cleanliness drive.

"We will soon launch a campaign to educate public about keeping the city clean. Along with this, we will take measures for development of waste disposal infrastructure," he said.

A similar anti-littering campaign was launched in China before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi will launch the much-awaited door-to-door garbage collection scheme in the coming year. In the first phase, tenders are being invited for Civil Lines, Rohini, Vasant Kunj and Dwarka.

The civic body will also install more garbage bins. Dustbins of 1000-litre capacity are proposed to be put up at markets and other busy areas.

The maintenance of urinal blocks at markets, bus stops and religious places are being handed over to private sector. Community toilet complexes are being handed over for production of compost, which will be used in municipal gardens.
