Wednesday, December 31, 2008 23:34 [IST]

Ranchi: Five Maoist rebels were arrested from a house here Wednesday and Maoist literature was seized from them, the police said.

The rebels belonging to People Liberation Front of India (PLFI) were nabbed from a house in Laxminagar colony, which comes under the Sukhdeonagar police station.

"Acting on a tip-off, a police team raided a house in Laxminagar and five PLFI members were arrested," Deputy Superintendent of Police Mahesh Paswan told reporters.

The rebels hail from Jharkhand's Palamau district and according to the police, they bought arms and propagated Maoist agenda in rural areas of the state.

Maoist rebels are active in 18 of the state's 24 districts. In the last seven years, over 1,350 people have been killed in Maoist-related violence in Jharkhand.
