Ajmal entered the country sans passport
Thursday, January 01, 2009 06:55 [IST]

Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Wednesday booked lone surviving terrorist of the November 26 attacks, Mohammad Ajmal Amir on fresh charges.

He has now been booked under various sections of Foreigners Act, Customs Act and Unlawful Activities and Preventive Act (UAPA) for entering the country without proper documents.

"Since he is a foreigner and had entered the country without a proper passport and documentation, we have booked him under Foreigners Act. He had entered the country illegally through the sea for which he has been booked under the Customs Act," Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (crime), said.

Apart from these fresh charges, Ajmal had earlier been booked under Section 302,Section 120 B for criminal conspiracy (a person can be given death penalty for all these charges) and the Arms Act and Explosives Act, police said. Ajmal had already been booked by the Railway police under the Railways Act for illegally entering the railway premises and damaging railway property.

The Mumbai police are likely to take custody of another Lashkar-e-Taiba operative, Imran Shehzad, who was known to Fahim Ansari (already in custody of the Mumbai police).

Ajmal has told the police about Zarar Shah during interrogation. Shah, who is believed to be a PRO of the LeT, is involved in the Mumbai attack. "Shah was involved in the conspiracy and communication with terrorists and LeT higher-ups," said a police official.

"Ajmal gave us information about the LeT operatives who are now in Pakistan. If we are unable to catch the Pakistani conspirators, since they are in foreign land, we will name them in the chargesheet. We will also give details about the other nine terrorists killed as Abetted Summary," said the officer.

The police are using tactical ways to interrogate Ajmal. "Ajmal has no access to newspapers and we havent yet told him that he has been disowned by Pakistan. We will tell him these things at an appropriate time because we expect him to share some more information with us," he said.
