Railway Police to get sophisticated weapons
Thursday, January 01, 2009 20:06 [IST]

Mumbai: The next time you visit any railway station, dont be surprised if you come across many constables carrying sophisticated weapons.

Railway Police Force (RPF) is being trained at the Mulund RPF Reserve lines to operate sophisticated weapons to combat terrorism.

The step is hoped to enable railway passengers to enjoy their journey fearlessly.

The training session begins early in the morning with the warm up exercises. It includes providing basic knowledge about AK-47 rifles, SLR and other sophisticated guns along with familiarity about any operation.

Knowledge about different positions of shooting is also being given to the men and women in the Railway Police Force.

RB Singh, assistant security commissioner for Railway Police Force said that the constables were taking active interest in the training.

RB Singh said, "We will be training 200 RPF, overall at the Mulund centre. Two batches are trained in a day, one in the morning and other in the evening. With a group of 24 police officers in two batches, the policemen are given training in operating and maintenance of the gun. Men and women both are given training to use sophisticated weapons during terror attacks."

"We are getting a very good response from the constables. They are appreciating this training. Every constable likes to handle sophisticated weapons and learn how to use them so that they can perform duty more effectively," Singh added.

The step holds significance in view of the recent terror attacks witnessed at four places in Mumbai and included CST Railway Station among other targeted places by terrorists.

Mumbai disaster management authorities said 195 people had been killed and 295 wounded in the terrorist attacks.
