Advani condemns serial blasts in Guwahati
Friday, January 02, 2009 09:26 [IST]

New Delhi: Condemning the serial bomb blasts in Guwahati, BJP senior leader L K Advani Thursday said it is a matter of concern that it happened shortly before Home Minister P Chidambaram's visit to the capital.

"I strongly condemn the serial bomb blasts in three crowded areas in Guwahati today afternoon.....It is a matter of concern that the blasts were set off shortly before the arrival of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram in the capital of Assam," Advani said in a statement here.

BJP had pledged its support to the UPA government in its fight against terror post-Mumbai terror attacks.

Five persons lost their lives while over 50 others were injured in the blasts.

The leader of opposition said the blasts could also have some connection with the victory of Sheikh Hasina Wajed in the Bangladesh elections.

"Only yesterday, the Prime Minister-elect of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wajed, had stated that her government would not allow terrorist groups to use the territory of Bangladesh to operate in India," Advani said.

He welcomed Hasina's statement and expressed suspicion that those involved in the blasts were inimical to better relations between India and Bangladesh.

He said the New Year would hopefully see a new era of co-operation between the two governments in eradicating terrorism and extremism from the region.
