New Delhi: In a drive to check corruption and bring in transparency to its administration, the Delhi Police Vigilance branch took action against 1,251 corrupt personnel in the last five years.

Out of the total personnel punished by the Vigilance branch, 382 police officers were issued show cause notices, explanation or warning memos to 202 officers, transferred 189 to non-sensitive units and suspended 130 others as a punishment for their involvement in corrupt practices, an official data showed.

According to the official data, the vigilance department initiated a total of 339 departmental enquiry against policemen during last five years -- including 37 men this year -- as punishment for their involvement in corrupt practices.

This year, the branch also issued show cause notice to 18 policemen and transferred 11 personnel to non-sensitive units as punishment.

Delhi Police has a total staff strength of around 60,000 including gazetted and non-gazetted officials.

Out of the total of 130 suspensions made in the last five years, 14 were suspended this year for accepting bribes, extorting money or negligence.

"The Vigilance department carries out regular checks to bring in transparency and accountability in administration and police personnel. We will intensify our drive in the coming months to check fraudulent practices," a senior police official said.
