Two militants killed in Kashmir gunbattle
Friday, January 02, 2009 12:41 [IST]

Srinagar: Two militants were gunned down by security forces during a cordon and search operation in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Friday.

Troops of the 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jointly surrounded a house in Boitingo village, about 55 km from here, Thursday afternoon on the basis of intelligence reports that militants were hiding inside it.

"The hiding militants were challenged to surrender. However, they opened fire at the troops, resulting in a sustained encounter during which the house was destroyed," a police officer told IANS.

"Bodies of the two militants were recovered from the debris this morning. The search is still on in the area," he added.

Arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the gunbattle.
