New Delhi: New allies CPI and CPI(M) today joined the AIADMK in petitioning the Election Commission against alleged misuse of police force by the ruling DMK in the Thirumangalam assembly byelection in Tamil Nadu.
The opposition parties alleged that the DMK was "pressurising" the police to register false cases against AIADMK leaders in order to prevent them from campaigning in the constituency.
"False cases are also registered in order to create a psychological fear in the minds of the general public who will hesitate to participate in the election process and exercise their franchise" on January nine polls, a memorandum submitted to Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy said.
The delegation led by AIADMK leader V Maitreyan said DMK partymen were instigating the police to indulge in violent attacks against AIADMK partymen and cadres and the police authorities were complying with the instructions of DMK ministers camping in the constituency.
The delegation which included D Raja (CPI), Nurul Huda (CPI-M) sought immediate deployment of Central paramilitary forces in the constituency to ensure free and fair polls.
