Atwal asks people to vote for "clean image"
Friday, January 02, 2009 18:28 [IST]
Phagwara: Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal said here today that there should be an option of recalling non-performing Members of Parliament and state Legislators.

"There should be an option in the Constitution of recalling non-performing MPs or MLAs," the Deputy Speaker said after laying the foundation stone of a modern language lab at local Guru Nanak College.

Addressing the function, Atwal asked electorates to send people with "clean image" to Lok Sabha in the next general elections.

He also requested NRIs to come forward for funding quality educational projects, especially in rural areas, by adopting villages of their birth.

On the issue of MPLAD grant, he said that it was people's money and must reach them without any "meddling of any middleman".

Pleading for early supply of grants use (utilisation) certificates, the leader said that a large chunk of these grants was going down the drains by getting lapsed as utilisation certificates were not being issued on time by concerned parties or institutions.

He also asked people to inform him if any kind of bribe was demanded from them in getting these grants.

Atwal alleged that the use certificates of 50 per cent of rupees 1.72 crore grant that he had issued from MPLAD scheme during last few months had not yet been issued yet.
