Shillong: Amid a heavy security blanket, Prime Minster Manmohan Singh arrived here this morning on a day-long visit.

Singh will inaugurate the 96th session of Indian Science Congress at the campus of North Easten Hill University, besides taking part in a couple of programmes at the country's biggest scientific meet.

The New Year Day's blasts in Assam's Guwahati has led the Meghalaya security apparatus to go on overdrive to ensure that there were no lapses and Prime Minister s visit goes off peacefully.

Surveillance has been stepped up all along the route the PM would take and bomb squads are patrolling the city.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Donkupar Roy is likely to meet Prime Minster on the sidelines of the meet to raise a host of issues like border trade with Bangladesh and the inter-state boundary dispute with Assam.

The SPG team, that had arrived here a couple of days back, has taken over the function site yesterday, a police spokesman said.

Quick reaction team comprising home guards have been formed in addition to the security personnel deployed from the Army and Assam Rifles.

Over 4000 guests, including scientists and dignitaries, from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in the science congress.
