Dhaka: Members of Parliament belonging to Awami League-led grand alliance were sworn in today as the party said its chief Sheikh Hasina, who led the grouping to a landslide victory in the general elections, was certain to be nominated as the prime minister.
Outgoing Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar administered the oath to the new MPs at the "oath hall" of the parliament building this afternoon.
According to an earlier parliament secretariat statement, the remaining MPs-elect - members of Hasina's arch-rival Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led four-party combine and independents - will be sworn in tomorrow afternoon.
Immediately after the oath-taking ceremony, Awami League, which won a three-fourths majority in the December 29 polls, convened a meeting of the lawmakers to elect its parliamentary party leaders.
Several senior leaders said Hasina was certain to be nominated as the prime minister.
"In line with the constitution, we will formally send a letter to the President (Iajuddin Ahmed) to appoint her as the prime minister," a senior Awami League leader told PTI.
