Pondy to ban use of plastic materials
Sunday, January 04, 2009 08:29 [IST]
Puducherry: Puducherry administration has decided to ban use of plastic materials in the Union Territory from July next in a phased manner, Chief Minister V Vaithilingam said today.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken at the cabinet meeting held earlier, Chief Minister said it was found that plastic products such as carry bags and cups were responsible for choking of drains and sewage canals in and around Puducherry region, which caused the recent floods.

The government had now decided to ban the use of the plastic products. The ban would be enforced in a phased manner from July, he said. Alternatively the administration would promote production and using of paper bags and cups.
