Karnataka police has been asked to tighten security for major software firms of the state, on the basis of an email threat received Saturday. The email originated in the US, according to preliminary investigations.
Indian agencies are not taking the threat lightly, sources said. The companies threatened are Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini and Cranes Software. Within hours of the threat, the Union home ministry issued urgent alerts to the Karnataka state police.
The email talks about a Youtube channel being blocked off, and how it wouldn’t deter terrorists from carrying out their task of targeting major software firms.
The Bangalore software majors have been in the crosshairs of terrorist groups for a long time, and the latest threat falls into the new terror pattern visible in the hinterlands. The terror groups, mostly operating from Pakistan, have been repeatedly targeting symbols of India’s economic prosperity. The Mumbai attacks were the most visible effort of the terror groups to wreck havoc on the global confidence in India’s rising economic power.
Given the nature of the email and its content, the government has taken it seriously, sources indicate. Sources here said the state police was believed to have already tightened security around the firms by Saturday evening and no chances were being taken.
The Bangalore software industry has been put under a tighter security cordon ever since the Mumbai attacks. The Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) has a prominent presence in Karnataka, especially in Bangalore.
This was visible in the attacks on the Indian Institute of Science and from the arrest of Raizuddin Nasir and other terrorists from the region.
Investigators believe that remnants of LeT modules are still operating in Karnataka, especially in Bangalore, and they could be looking at striking at appropriate moments.
