In a sensational overnight swoop, the Kasargod police and Udupi police nabbed seven terror suspects. While the Kasaragod police picked up four including an alleged kingpin of terror links, their Udupi counterpart caught three suspects, the kingpin’s hirelings, around midnight on Friday.
Those caught by the Udupi police have been handed over to Shimoga police for questioning while the suspects held at Kasargod are being interrogated in Kannur.
The arrest of the foursome was on a tip-off from the Gujarat police, a senior police officer told DNA.
The Gujarat police informed the Kasargod Anti-Terror Squad that the four--Abdul Hameed of Kannur district and three others, Riyaz, Rasheed and Naisam --have been facilitators for the youths enrolled for terror training in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
“Abdul Hameed has been charged with plotting to murder the late chief minister E K Nayanar, and sending four Muslim youths to Pakistan, for terror training,” says sources in the Kerala ATS.
The plot to kill Nayanar was made a few years ago when his party, the CPI(M), had failed to get the imprisoned radical, Abdula Nassar Madani out of jail.
Madani was jailed for his complicity in the Coimbatore blasts. ATS officials classify Abdul Hameed as one of the “chief patrons” of youths who wanted to take terror training in Pakistan and PoK. Hameed had also sent one Ashraf for training at terror camps in Pakistan.
“The other three, namely, Riyaz, Rasheed and Naisam were part of his network in Kasargod and Kannur districts”, says the ATS report with the government.
Hameed arranged for accommodation, food and entertainment for terror trainees in Delhi, it adds. The police are looking for another, one Ayub, who is also stated to be a key player in terror facilitation.
