Andhra cop accuses state intelligence chief
Sunday, January 04, 2009 13:59 [IST]

Hyderabad: A police officer in Andhra Pradesh has accused the state intelligence chief of "caste discrimination" while deciding postings.

Sundar Kumar Das, an officer of the Andhra Pradesh police service promoted to the Indian Police Service (IPS) ranks, has filed a complaint under Schedule Caste/Scheduled Tribes Atrocities (prevention) Act against Additional Director General of Police (intelligence) Aravinda Rao.

Das, currently chief vigilance officer at Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGenco), filed a complaint at Saifabad police station here, seeking Rao's prosecution under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.

The complainant alleged that Rao created hurdles every time his name was considered for posting as superintendent of police since 2004, causing "injury, insult and annoyance".

"Aravinda Rao is expected to brief the government objectively on the credentials of the officers. But he is dishonestly, wilfully, deliberately and continuously maligning me by resorting to character assassination and giving false and frivolous information with animosity and caste bias as I am an SC and untouchable according to him," Das alleged in his complaint.

Saifabad police were yet to register the case. The police inspector there said they would first investigate the allegations before registering a complaint.

Rao, a powerful IPS officer considered close to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has denied the allegations and said it was the government that decides on matters of postings.

Das had earlier approached the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) against his higher officer for writing an adverse comment on his annual confidential report that doubted his administrative abilities.
