Israel did not ask US before Gaza incursion
Monday, January 05, 2009 08:26 [IST]

Washington: Israel had not sought the green light from the US before launching its ground incursion against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, US Vice-President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

"They did not seek clearance or approval from us, certainly," Cheney told US television broadcaster CBC in an interview. The Pentagon earlier said Washington had been informed of the military action.

US Senate majority leader Harry Reid - a Democrat senator - meanwhile showed solidarity with Israel. Hamas was an terrorist organization that threatened the Jewish state with rocket attacks, he told CBS.
