Monday, January 05, 2009 10:33 [IST]

Bhubaneswar: Maoist rebels have killed a trader in Orissa's Koraput district as they suspected him to be a police informer, officials said Monday.

Armed rebels shot dead Kali Varapa Kanta Rao at his grocery shop in Almonda village in Koraput Sunday evening, District Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar told IANS.

"The two rebels shot Rao, suspecting him to be a police informer, although he was not one," the official added.

Koraput is around 500 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

"Police personnel have headed to Almonda village," Kumar said.
