Kolkata: Four Bangladeshi nationals sentenced to the gallows for the 2004 murder of an Awami League parliamentarian and close associate of prime minister-designate Sheikh Hasina, have been arrested by the West Bengal police.

The four, who fled Bangladesh after being sentenced to death, were nabbed by the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) late Sunday night from Kolkata's adjoining South 24-Parganas district.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of CID sleuths arrested Nazrul Islam alias Dipu, Jakir Husain alias Rupak, Wadul Islam alias Tipu and Sahayat Ahmed alias Manju from a bus stand at Garia locality in South 24-Parganas district.

"They were arrested by the CID and produced before a city court today (Monday)," CID deputy inspector general (operation) S.N. Gupta told IANS.

He said: "The four criminals murdered Ahsanullah Master, who was an Awami League parliamentarian and vice-chancellor of Titumir University, in 2004."

"The Interpol had also issued a look-out notice against the four criminals who escaped from Bangladesh a few years ago."

According to CID sources, the four-member team was operating a crime syndicate in neighbouring Bangladesh through telephone from Garia locality.

They had come to West Bengal last year and rented a house at Garia locality.
