Gilani urges US to repatriate Pak prisoners
Monday, January 05, 2009 19:22 [IST]

Islamabad: Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani Monday urged the US to repatriate all Pakistani nationals held at the Guantanamo prison in Cuba.

Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher, the News Network International (NNI) news agency reported.

Five Pakistanis are currently being held in detention at Guantanamo.

"The Pakistan government has urged the US authorities to facilitate their repatriation to Pakistan as soon as possible," a foreign ministry statement said.

The US arrested scores of Pakistanis in Afghanistan in 2001. Some were handed over to the US by Pakistani authorities on suspicion of links with Islamist Taliban and Al Qaeda militant groups, NNI said.
