Lawyers disrupt working of Allahabad HC
Tuesday, January 06, 2009 19:11 [IST]
Allahabad: Judicial work was disrupted in the Allahabad High Court today by advocates protesting the transfer of three judges, even as the High Court Bar Association condemned the incident.

The "strike" was called by a group of advocates, not organised under any banner, who moved around the court campus and prevented judicial work from continuing.

They were protesting the transfer of three judges of the High Court whose names have figured in the multi-crore GPF scam of Ghaziabad.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting was called by the High Court Bar Association, headed by its president V C Mishra, who condemned the strike as an act of rowdyism.

The HCBA also suspended its former president Chhotey Lal Pandey and another advocate Jagdish Singh Sengar for "giving the call for a strike without obtaining permission from the Bar Association".

The HCBA resolution also made it clear that appointments and transfers of judges were the prerogative of the Supreme Court collegium.
