Hyderabad: Election authorities in Andhra Pradesh have initiated several citizen-friendly measures for voter enrollment, including e-registration, that can evolve as a trailblazer for the rest of the country.
E-registration, drop boxes and enrollment through post offices are some of the initiatives that were a big hit with IT-savvy Hyderabad residents as the measures simplified the registration process.
"Our approach has been to find different ways in which the citizens can be facilitated. As a part of this process, in addition to the normal existing channels, we have taken up certain initiatives which make the process more citizen- friendly," state Chief Electoral Officer I V Subba Rao told PTI in an interview.
E-registration enables people to enroll on-line, where enrollment can be done on the Commission website.
Similarly, drop-box facility was introduced as citizens were finding it difficult to go to the limited number of offices designated for registration.
"There were only 20 designated offices in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits and we thought of providing this facility at places where citizens normally go, like the shopping malls, post offices, banks, petrol bunks".
"We placed 2,000 drop boxes in various places on a pilot basis in Hyderabad. We have received 1.02 lakh applications in these drop boxes, out of which 60,000 voters have been given voter IDs," Rao said.
