10 killed in Costa Rica quake
Saturday, January 10, 2009 07:35 [IST]

San Jose: The toll in Costa Rica's 6.2 magnitude quake has risen to 10, EFE reported.

Officials said the most affected regions are near the epicentre of the quake near a mountainous region in the central part of Costa Rica. Earlier, reports said five people were killed in the quake.

The powerful quake that occurred at around 1.19 p.m. Thursday, was also felt in the neighboring Nicaragua.

The Red Cross said three more people were found buried in two places Friday in a landslide caused by the quake.

A spokesman for the aid agency said 42 people were missing and 91 injured after the quake.

Rescue officials said some 1,244 people who are at risk would be evacuated.

Authorities have meanwhile opened seven temporary shelters to house the affected people.

Buildings and properties were damaged at many places in the country, the report said Friday.
