TN govt warns agitating truckers

Chennai: As the strike by truckers and oil PSU officials crippled movement of goods, Tamil Nadu Government tonight warned lorry operators that their licences would be cancelled if they did not cooperate in transporting essential commodities, including petrol and diesel.

An official release here said in order to ensure availability of fuel and other essential commodities, the district collectors and police commissioners had been directed to invoke the provisions of Motor Vehicles Requisitioning Act of 1970 and take over the vehicles needed to transport these goods.

The release said the registration of vehicles and licences of drivers who refuse to cooperate in this regard would be cancelled.

Hence, the public need not resort to panic buying, it said and warned of stern action against those hoarding essential commodities.
