Saturday, January 10, 2009 21:15 [IST]

A Dutch national died in the UttarKashi district of the state in wee hours on Saturday due to excessive cold in the region, police sources said.

The body of Gregory Arni Ramdin (40) - a resident of Netherlands was recovered early morning from a forest department cottage in Chidbasa under Maneri police station, 10 kms from here in the Gangotri region, the sources said.

The sources said the foreigner died of excessive cold as the region was experiencing heavy snowfall. Passport and other documents recovered from Ramdins possession revealed his identity, they said, adding they could not find any other possible cause of his death.

A message has been sent to Union Home ministry, Embassy of Netherlands and related departments in this connection, they said. Meanwhile, the upper reaches of Uttarakhand continued to experience heavy snowfall and severe cold.

Sources in meteorological department said the condition is likely to continue for few more days. Prevailing weather condition in the state has led to a decrease in the number of foreign travellers coming to the state capital and Masoori in particular, met department officials said.
