Omar gets cracking on lax govt. staff
Sunday, January 11, 2009 06:04 [IST]

Jammu: This story has all the hallmarks of Anil Kapoor's starrer reel-life drama Nayak. However it is for the real and 38 year old chief minister Omar Abdullah is playing the real-life character of Nayak in Jammu and Kashmir.

No laxity, no compromise, no sycophancy and no non-sense approach are the new buzzwords of the youngest chief minister. And those defying the norms are shown the door, true to the Nayak style. Sample this: On his first day at work, the superintendent and deputy superintendent of Srinagar's biggest Lal Ded maternity hospital were replaced in minutes after the CM made a surprise visit to take stock of its functioning, giving jitters to his security.

Omar on his way to Srinagar airport when he suddenly stopped his cavalcade and barged into the hospital leaving his security high and dry. He went round various sections of the hospital and was dissatisfied with what he saw.

He was surrounded by many attendants who complained of lack of facilities. Angry Omar immediately ordered the replacement of the superintendent and deputy superintendent. "His visit has shaken the whole administration because he is the first CM to visit us without prior notice.

Earlier, we were informed, " said an employee. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation disinfectant teams were immediately rushed to hospital. Omar's style of working has got an otherwise lax administration all agog. He has already made the round of various offices and interacted with the officers. "Officers and officials who are able and efficient will be encouraged," he said.
