Red Fort to have shuttle service and parking lot
Sunday, January 11, 2009 11:26 [IST]

New Delhi: If the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has its way, visitors to the 17th century architectural marvel of Red Fort will travel free on a shuttle bus from nearby Delhi Gate.

The planned battery-operated service will take tourists from Delhi Gate to the Red Fort free of cost, ASI Superintendent Archaeologist (Delhi) K K Muhammad told PTI.

However, he did not specify the exact date when the project will commence.

"The project is in the pipeline. Such measures are being taken to make the heritage monument more visitor-friendly," he said.

In another step, a 400-vehicle parking lot will also be operational soon near the majestic monument.

The parking lot will also help in earning revenue as charges will be levied to park one's vehicle, Muhammed said.

Visitors to the monument, situated in Old Delhi, face a lot of problems in parking their vehicles. The new parking lot will ease their problems, he said, adding that the area also does not have adequate parking space.
