Periyakulam (TN): Like every year, this year too Hindus and Muslims jointly observed Muharram on Friday last by collectively praying at the local temple of Goddess Natchiamman, showcasing religious harmony.
Local villagers believe that the Goddess blesses Hindus, Muslims and Christians.
During Muharram every year, Hindus take flowers from Muslims for doing pooja to the presiding deity, says a local official.
They then carry a Muslim youth in a palanquin. They also pay homage to Muslims who passed away and perform religious ceremonies for them.
During Friday's Muharram, the Hindus like Shia muslims lashed themselves, walked through a fire pit, picking burning pieces of charcoal and pouring it on their head. People from nearby R. Pattinam, Mariyur,and Kadaldi also participated in the ceremony.
