Monday, January 12, 2009 09:50 [IST]

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir's ruling National Conference and the Congress will fight the coming Lok Sabha elections as allies, National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah announced Saturday.

“Of the six Lok Sabha seats in the seat, the National Conference shall field candidates in three and the Congress in the other three," the former chief minister told reporters at his residence here.

The six parliamentary seats are Srinagar, Anantnag, Baramulla, Ladakh, Jammu and Udhampur.

Abdullah added that he would formally take over as president of the National Conference Monday.

After nominating his son Omar Abdullah as the chief ministerial candidate of the party, the elder Abdullah had announced he would work to strengthen the party and also discharge a bigger role at the national level including in efforts to promote peace between India and Pakistan.
