Delhiites not keen on servant verification: police
Monday, January 12, 2009 12:35 [IST]

New Delhi: Despite increasing incidents of crime committed by domestic helps, Delhiites seem to be not keen on getting their servants verified by police with a whopping 64 per cent of the workers remaining unverified.

According to figures for 2008,sleuths had visited 9,12,547 houses and antecedents of 1,11,484 servants were investigated.

However, only 41,046 servants were found having their verification done by households, a senior police official said, adding that Delhi Police had organised a five-month long servant verification drive which started on May 12 last year.

"Out of the over 1.11 lakh servants we enquired about, 64 per cent of them are unverified. People are not still cooperating with us despite a sustained media campaign and sensitisation programmes," the official said.

"It is unfortunate that majority of the house-holders do not go in for servant verification. Like last year, we will continue our efforts to get servants verified this year also," he added.

Admitting that the verification process is not fool proof, he said through this exercise, some kind of information is created about the servant.

"It is true that some verification forms which we sent to other states do not return. But this exercise will help in creating a database of servants in the capital," he said.

"We have his or her photograph, finger print and so on. This will come in handy when there is a emergency," the official said.
